From Station Four to a room full of card tables
A pumping station, twenty idle years, two winters of scrubbing and a stubborn refusal to move any of the machinery.
What we kept and what we could not
The two horizontal flywheels stayed, because moving them would have meant taking the roof off. So did the gauge board, the crane rail and the hand-painted delivery numbers above the doors.
The pump pits were filled and levelled — that part hurt, but you cannot run a dining room around three metres of open concrete.
Everything soft in the building is new: the felt, the lamps, the kitchen line, the bar in the old switch room. Everything hard is exactly as we found it.

1938
The year the station first pumped.
1998
The year it stopped.
2022
The year the doors opened again.
Four things that do not shift
- A card game here is a card game. No stake goes in, no prize comes out, and no one is chasing anything.
- The menu follows the river and the blocks. If the fish did not come in, the dish is off the board and we will say so.
- The room stays at seventy people. We would rather turn away a booking than lose the quiet.
- Nobody drives home from here half-cut. We will put a cab on and hold your keys until it arrives.
